The Village Callers - Live (Rampart Records) 1968

- A landmark bit of LA funk -- the one and only album cut by the fantastic Village Callers, a hip combo with an equal talent for handling soul, Latin, and funk! This set was recorded live at the Plush Bunny -- the kind of cool small club we wish we could have attended -- and it features a great range of excellent numbers, including the group's famous reading of "Hector", known by many for its great break on the intro! (And just in case you're wondering, the famous version is the one from this album -- as the 45 features the live cut too, and there was never a studio take.) The album also includes a great version of Joao Donato's "The Frog" -- done in a skipping Sergio Mendes style -- plus many other groovy cuts! Plus, this reissue also features 2 bonus cuts -- "Evil Ways" and "I'm Leaving" -- both not on the original LP! - Dusty Groove
