KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 12/28/10 Ebo Taylor w/ VA - Afrobeat Airways: West African Shock Waves - Ghana & Togo 1972-1979 (LISTEN)

Afrobeat Airways: West African Shock Waves - Ghana & Togo 1972-1979 (Analog Africa) 2010

- Raw, amazing grooves sailing the Afro Beat Airways – organ flavored Afro funk, soul & psychedelia from West African Ghana & Togo in the 70s – one of best compilations yet on the increasingly awe inspiring Analog Africa label! The African percussion is raw and danceable and funk steeped, and most of the numbers have a range of really cool organ sounds, and vocals that range from insistently melodic singing to to funky shouts. From there, the groove is more varied. There's strains of tried & true Afro funk & soul, larger group jazzy jams and more stripped down cosmic and psyche influenced nuggets. Exhaustive research on the part of Analog Africa is distilled into a riveting, yet nicely diverse and pretty much perfect compilation with great sound, beautiful packaging and a wealth of notes. 2LP version has 16 tracks in all (2 more than the CD): "Dankasa" by Uppers International, "Ma Mserew Me" by Apoagya Show Band, "Come Along" by Ebo Taylor & The Pelicans, 'Afe Ato Yen Bio" by De Frank Professionals, "Awula Bo Fee Ene" by Orchestre Abass, "Ne Noya" by Cos-Ber-Zam and more, plus the vinyl exclusives "Obiye Saa Wui" by 3rd Generation Band and "Operation Bye-Bye" by Orchestre Abass - Dusty Groove

Ebo Taylor - "Odofo Nyi Akyiri Biara" - My Love and Music (Gapophone Records) 1970's

- The exceptional guitar player is considered as one of the most distinguished Highlife, Afro beat and jazz composers of Ghana. Between 1962 and 1965 he studied together with his friend Fela Kuti at the renowned Eric Guilder School of Music in London. As early as the 50th and 60th he caused quite a sensation as the head of the Stargazers Dance Band as well as the Broadway Band. In the early 70th he headed the best known Big Band of Ghana, the “Uhuru Band” (later called Uhurus) and so formed the Highlife.Since the 70th Taylor produced different albums as solo artist and developed more and more his own, innovative and distinctive style – recognisable for instance on his albums “Ebo Taylor and the Pelicans” or “Twer Nyame”. Ebo has been very active in numerous projects as session musician. Besides his solo works, he contributed significantly to the development of music in Ghana, as arranger and producer to the big labels in Ghana, like Essiebons and Gapophone. For these labels, being their musical director, he produced i.e. well known musicians such as C.K. Mann as well as the Apagya Show Band, a legendary All-Star-Highlife-Funk-Band, or artists like Pat Thomas, Jewel Ackah and Papa Yankson - Analog Africa

Primarily a rhythm and blues funk band, they began to achieve wide acclaim as a result of their unique sound and style of choreography. The band toured as a Vegas style show band for several years; setting attendance records everywhere they played. KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 12/7/10 Ray Fernandez and His Court (LISTEN)

Ray Fernandez - Ray and His Court (Sound Triangle) 1973

- The late 60's and early 70's proved to be a fertile era for the Miami music scene. Those in the know, know that it was the heavy influx of Cuban musicians who had recently migrated to Miami as being responsible for uping the musical ante, and Ray Fernandez was the first Cuban musician to incorporate American funk and soul rhythms into the Cuban mix. Two records in particular are a testament to this fact. Originally recorded at the legendary M&M studios in Hialeah in 1973, "Cookie Crumbs" and "Soul Freedom" were prime examples of the Ray Fernandez touch. Out of print since 1974 on the highly sought after Sound Triangle label, these two pieces of 7" wax sell for as much as $650 apiece on the collectors market in America, England, Germany and Japan. World-renowned DJs Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow and Phil Asher have sampled these tracks heavily and these tracks have appeared on some of their biggest recordings. For the first time since these rare tracks have been out of print, we have assembled a CD of Ray Fernandez and his Musical Court's best recordings from the original master tapes. - Amazon

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 11/30/10 Little Willie John w/ Various Artists - R&B HIpshakers: Teach Me To Monkey ! (LISTEN)

Various Artists - R&B Hipshakers Vol 1 - Teach Me To Monkey (Vampisoul) 50 - 60"s

- Uptempo and danceable collection of R&B and early soul from the Federal and King vaults, compiled by renowned DJ Mr Fine Wine (Downtown Soulville, WFMU). First volume of our new series, sure to keep you dancing in the months ahead. Most tracks have never been reissued.

Side B: Little Willie John - My Nerves (King) 1956
Side A: Lulu Reed - What Make You So Cold (Federal) 1961
7" 45 rpm BoxSet (Vampisoul) 2010

- I wasn't even close to being a twinkle in my dad's horn-rimmed eye in 1961. But I have to conclude that there's something special about that year for me. When compiling Vampisoul's dip into King Records' deep, deep rhythm-and-blues vaults, I realized that I'm a sucker for the sounds of '61. And, well, '62 too. Not that other years slightly earlier and later aren't represented as well, but… fully a quarter of the tracks herein are from 1961. What happened then? President Kennedy happened then, for one thing, inaugurated on January 20. Also: chimps and their perhaps marginally more civilized human cousins in space; Roger Maris eclipsing the Babe, albeit with a conceptual asterisk; Jets vs Sharks on the West Side; the Cold War in full swing; a hot war in Vietnam just starting to smolder, though few Americans had even heard of the place yet. And brilliant black musicians making timeless records for a Cincinnati, Ohio family of labels - gibbling and gobbling down Broadway, implanting indelible, stinging guitar lines in the public consciousness, and making folks do the ginger snap like there was no tomorrow, which I'm sure there didn't always seem to be.

This collection of genuine King and Federal R&B sides encompasses crazy dances (the impossible-but-highly entertaining-to-picture 'Slummer The Slum'; 'Posin'', which beat Madonna to the voguing punch by some 30 years); intense guitar instrumentals (what can you say about a label employing so many superstar guitar slingers that even Freddie King probably has to fight for a spot in one's top 3, what with Johnny Watson, Ike Turner, Mickey Baker and Lowman Pauling staking pretty strong claims for inclusion themselves?); inspired forays into mind-altering whimsy ('Hog Killin' Time', the first of a trilogy of swinetingling masterpieces by Eddie Kirk, along with 'The Hawg' on Volt and 'The Grunt' on Fortune); the timeless ode to male horniness 'One Zippy Zam'; and hook-filled, honest-to-goodness love songs (try to get 'I Don't Know About You' out of your head - or your heart).

We can argue endlessly about the appropriateness of one's mom teaching one to monkey. If it's polite, sober propriety you're after, look elsewhere. For a raucous and potentially life-changing R&B dance party in a box, though, you'll find TEACH ME TO MONKEY to be just the thing. - Vampisoul

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 11/23/10 Little Francisco Greaves (LISTEN)

Little Francisco Greaves - Necia de Mi Corazon/Saying Goodbye 45rpm (Sally Ruth) 60's
- Original Pressing

SWEET ! Afro Latin Panamanian Soul Groove unlike no other with english and spanish vocals !

Little Francisco Greaves -Mooving Grooving /Hiko Ito 45rpm (Soundway) 60's

This sweet soul inspired double header harks back to Panama in the late 60’s, a time when musicians fearlessly combined and brilliantly executed styles that reflected their multicultural environment.

‘Moving Grooving’ and ‘Hiko Iko’ are both ultra rare hand clapping, foot stomping soul workouts courtesy of the Greaves brothers, Frankie and Franklyn. ‘Moving Grooving’ is featured on Soundway Records’s third release in the Panama series titled Panama! 3, compiled by Quantic and Roberto Gyemant AKA Beto.

Both tracks were originally served up on a super limited 45 on Segraves Records in 1969 and and highlight the massive influence of American soul music on musica Panameña during and after the black power cultural movement in the US. A reference to the early work of the godfather of soul, James Brown, may seem a tad lazy but it’s about as honest as it gets. - Soundway

This is the cover for a limited-press record from a very young Little Frankie Greaves with big brother Franklyn Greaves on guitar. Frankie Greaves also had a big hit in the mid '60s with the sweet soul Necia De Mi Corazon -see above. - Soundway

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 11/16/10 Jesse James LISTEN)

Jesse James - "Are You Gonna Leave Me" / Someone to Love Me 45rpm (Shirley Records)
VA - Northern Soul Classiest Rarities (Kent Records CDKEND 338)

- Jesse James "Are You Gonna Leave Me" may be a straight Impressions pastiche but what a one it is. The trademark guitar chords herald an ultra-soulful lament and the brass section apes Johnny Pate’s Impressions arrangements to a tee. Our other Jesse, Mr Davis demoed his big beat ballad ‘There’s Someone For me’ for none other than Dean Martin who must have been on a bender when he foolishly rejected it. The record was issued on three different labels, the story of which is revealed here for the first time; all these Jesse 45s fetch £1000+. - Ady Croasdell - Ace Records

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 11/9/10 Bobby Vince Paunetto (LISTEN)

El Sonido Moderno: Modern Sound Of Bobby Paunetto (Seeco/Mardi Gras/Fania Records) 1965

- A vibes player who had learned at the feet of Cal Tjader, then recruited a band of Latin virtuosos, Bobby Paunetto recorded a gem of Latin jazz with 1968's El Sonido Moderno: The Modern Sound of Bobby Pauneto. (Yes, the less-than-intrepid Mardi Gras label actually misspelled their own artist's name.) Although Latin crate diggers may know Paunetto's name from the uptempo-but-jazzy dancefloor chestnut "Why Is Woody Sad?," the LP is a far more subdued affair, trading on Paunetto's fluid solos along with a few vocal turns from Willie Torres (a favorite go-to singer in salsa circles) and a pretty fair band. Better suited for a demure supper club than a red-hot salsa joint, the band plays all originals except for "Alfie" — although Paunetto would've turned in a better album jamming on more Latin or jazz standbys. [Included with a 2010 reissue on Fania are six tracks recorded for Seeco in 1965, most of which favor the same slow tempo but with more Latin soul than jazz.] - Itunes (Listen)

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 11/2/10 Bobby Cook & the Explosions - Local Customs: Down River Revival (LISTEN)

Bobby Cook & The Explosions - Local Customs - Down River Revival (Numero Group) 1960 -1970s

- One of the coolest collections ever put out by The Numero Group – and that's saying a lot, given the hipness of the label! Downriver Revival chronicles the story of a unique studio in Michigan – Double U Sound, a custom recording spot that captured a wonderful range of soul, funk, gospel, and other sounds from the local community – beautifully presented here in a full 2LP set, plus a bonus DVD that features the near-complete 200 song archive of the studio! The DVD's really unique – so we'll talk about it first: Done with an interactive menu that lets you literally comb through the boxes of tapes in the Double U vault – selecting each reel recorded by the studio, and sampling the rich array of wonderful sounds from this untapped Michigan scene – a huge amount of music, far more than you'd ever find on a 2LP compilation. The DVD also features a documentary on the studio and Downriver Revial project – and that alone would be worth the price of admission – but the 2LP set then features 24 key numbers pulled from the vaults – tracks that were either issued on rare 45s, or never issued at all – and which represent a wonderful array of soulful sounds that definitely lives up to the Numero standard! Titles include "There's A Light" by Shirley Ann Lee, "Take Care Of Us" by The Revelations, "Untitled Jam" by Bobby Cook & The Explosions, "Foot Stumping (alt)" by Organics, "While You Were Gone" by Combinations, "Heaven" by Deliverance Echoes, "Untitled" by Burgess Band, "Round N Round" by Junior Mays Group, and "Walk With Me" by Calvin Cooke. - Dusty Groove

Bennito Sextet Plus One - (Mardi Gras) 1968

- Boogaloo and nothing but! This is the kind of groovy Latin soul record you always hope to find when digging for Latin sides – and it's got that perfect mix of soul vocals and sock-boogaloo grooves that some of the best young combos were turning out in the late 60s. Bennito and crew have a tight firey lineup – one that features vibes and piano over percussion, with good English vocals, and a nice penchant for catchy grooves. KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 10/19/10 Wes Montgomery Trio w/ Melvin Rhyne (LISTEN) - Soul by the Pound Presents Jamarek

Wes Montgomery Trio w/ Melvin Rhyne - A Dynamic Sound (Riverside Records) 1959

- While even label executive Orrin Keepnews admits that The Wes Montgomery Trio may have fallen short of representing Montgomery's talent, he still felt that this debut captured a large portion of it. Recorded on October 5 and 6 in 1959, guitarist Montgomery is joined by organist Melvin Rhyne and drummer Paul Parker. Montgomery's style, block chords and octaves, is already firmly in place, and he delivers lovely solos on "'Round Midnight," "Whisper Not," and "Satin Doll." The choice of material, in fact, from classics like "Yesterdays" to originals like Montgomery's "Jingles," never falters. The only drawback is that the accompaniment, which though solid, doesn't seem to perfectly match his guitar style. One gets the impression that Montgomery's forceful, deliberate style would be better-served by beefier arrangements. Having said this, Montgomery's performance -- coming at the end of a decade represented by guitarists like Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel -- was a revolution in technique and execution. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a 36-year-old guitarist re-imagines the jazz guitar solo. There are two bonus tracks on The Wes Montgomery Trio: extra takes of "Satin Doll" and "Missile Blues." Although later Riverside recordings of Montgomery are more fully realized, fans will enjoy returning to the moment when he first burst upon the jazz scene. [The album appeared again in 2004, newly remastered and with bonus tracks intact.] ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr. CD Universe

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 10/12/10 Blowfly aka Clarence Reid (LISTEN)

Blowfly aka Clarence Reid - The Weird World of Blowfly (Weird World) 1973

- Recorded live in the studio, The Weird World of Blowfly has the ambience of an after-hours party. In the tradition of older albums by similar (though tamer) acts like Doug Clark & Hot Nuts, The Weird World of Blowfly starts with his theme song, "Weird World," and then moves through 14 sexual and scatological parodies of popular soul and pop hits of the time, interspersed with good-humored, rambling introductions. So is it funny? Some will undoubtedly find the whole enterprise juvenile and distasteful, and frankly, a couple of the parodies are a little too obvious to be clever (surely sixth graders around the world have written songs like "Shittin' on the Dock of the Bay"), but most of the album is really very funny, for those who like this sort of thing. The 1995 reissue adds three tracks to the original LP (first released on Clarence Reid's own Weird World label), including both sides of a celebrated mid-'70s holiday single, "Jingle F****n' Bells" and "Queer for the New Year," along with, oddly enough, a clean single released under Reid's own name in 1974, "Fonky Party." - Itunes

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 10/5/10 Oscar Brown Jr. (LISTEN)

Oscar Brown Jr. - Sin and Soul ...and Then Some (Columbia Records) 1960

- Oscar Brown, Jr.'s debut recording is a true classic. A brilliant lyricist, a dramatic singer, and a highly individual genius in his own way, Brown performed a dozen memorable selections for this album. His lyrics to "Work Song," "Watermelon Man," "Afro-Blue," and particularly "Dat Dere" are famous; "But I Was Cool" and "Signifyin' Money" are humorous; "Bid 'Em In" is a chilling depiction of a slave auction; and "Rags and Old Iron" is quite touching. Essential music from an underrated great. [In addition to the original program, a 1996 CD reissue added five previously unreleased selections from the same sessions (most of which were later remade), including four from the Brown musical Kicks and Company. - Itunes
