KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound KTUH 2/16/10 Richard "Groove" Holmes (LISTEN)

Richard "Grooves" Holmes - On Basie’s Bandstand (Prestige Records) 1966

- On Basie’s Bandstand features seven unreleased tunes from a 1966 live set and is about as basic a set of soul jazz as you can get. Too many practitioners at the time often tried to tinker with a reliable formula by including current pop tunes or more exotic material into the repertoire, neglecting the nuts and bolts formula that made soul jazz so appealing in the first place. Although Holmes enjoyed the occasional ballad in the studio, here in the live setting he sticks to predictable burners like “Night Train” and “Moanin’”, both of which would be familiar to the nightclub audience. There are no ballads or bossas, just straight forward blues, many of which are taken at a fire breathing pace. - Dave Rickert, All About Jazz

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound KTUH 2/9/10 Nathan Davis (LISTEN)

Nathan Davis - The Best of Nathan Davis (Jazzman) 2009

- All credit to Jazzman for helping broaden the reputation of saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist and all-round under-appreciated jazz great Nathan Davis, who spent much of his career in Europe before ultimately returning to his American homeland as a professor of ethnomusicology at the University Of Pittsburgh. This anthology collects tracks from each of Davis' rare and hard-to-find LPs, presenting a cross-section of the various different strands of jazz he so compellingly explored during the '60s and '70s. "Nathan Davis has been an internationally significant figure in jazz throughout the latter half of the 20th century, but to many his musical legacy remains little known. This album presents the music of Nathan Davis as it developed through the '60s and '70s, from bop through modal to world sounds and funk. - Bookmat

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound KTUH 2/2/10 Archie Shepp (LISTEN)

Archie Shepp - Kwanza (Impulse Records) 1969

- A brilliant little album from Archie Shepp -- material recorded on a variety of dates at the end of the 60s, but packaged together as an extremely soulful set in the mid 70s! There's a feel here that rivals some of the best moments of the Attica Blues years -- a mix of spiritual soul jazz and bolder modern moments -- reigned in nicely from the freer Shepp sound of a few years before, and given a really righteous focus by the addition of vocals on some tracks. Archie sings a bit himself, and one number features Leon Thomas singing with Tasha Thomas and Doris Troy -- a very odd meeting in the studio! Players include Woody Shaw, Jimmy Owens, Dave Burrell, Grachan Moncur III, and Wally Richardson -- and the tracks even get a bit funky at times! Titles include an excellent version of "New Africa", which was recorded later in Paris by Grachan Moncur III -- plus "Back Back", "Spoo Pee Doo", "Slow Drag", and Cal Massey's "Bakai." - Dusty Groove
