KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 12/28/10 Ebo Taylor w/ VA - Afrobeat Airways: West African Shock Waves - Ghana & Togo 1972-1979 (LISTEN)

Afrobeat Airways: West African Shock Waves - Ghana & Togo 1972-1979 (Analog Africa) 2010

- Raw, amazing grooves sailing the Afro Beat Airways – organ flavored Afro funk, soul & psychedelia from West African Ghana & Togo in the 70s – one of best compilations yet on the increasingly awe inspiring Analog Africa label! The African percussion is raw and danceable and funk steeped, and most of the numbers have a range of really cool organ sounds, and vocals that range from insistently melodic singing to to funky shouts. From there, the groove is more varied. There's strains of tried & true Afro funk & soul, larger group jazzy jams and more stripped down cosmic and psyche influenced nuggets. Exhaustive research on the part of Analog Africa is distilled into a riveting, yet nicely diverse and pretty much perfect compilation with great sound, beautiful packaging and a wealth of notes. 2LP version has 16 tracks in all (2 more than the CD): "Dankasa" by Uppers International, "Ma Mserew Me" by Apoagya Show Band, "Come Along" by Ebo Taylor & The Pelicans, 'Afe Ato Yen Bio" by De Frank Professionals, "Awula Bo Fee Ene" by Orchestre Abass, "Ne Noya" by Cos-Ber-Zam and more, plus the vinyl exclusives "Obiye Saa Wui" by 3rd Generation Band and "Operation Bye-Bye" by Orchestre Abass - Dusty Groove

Ebo Taylor - "Odofo Nyi Akyiri Biara" - My Love and Music (Gapophone Records) 1970's

- The exceptional guitar player is considered as one of the most distinguished Highlife, Afro beat and jazz composers of Ghana. Between 1962 and 1965 he studied together with his friend Fela Kuti at the renowned Eric Guilder School of Music in London. As early as the 50th and 60th he caused quite a sensation as the head of the Stargazers Dance Band as well as the Broadway Band. In the early 70th he headed the best known Big Band of Ghana, the “Uhuru Band” (later called Uhurus) and so formed the Highlife.Since the 70th Taylor produced different albums as solo artist and developed more and more his own, innovative and distinctive style – recognisable for instance on his albums “Ebo Taylor and the Pelicans” or “Twer Nyame”. Ebo has been very active in numerous projects as session musician. Besides his solo works, he contributed significantly to the development of music in Ghana, as arranger and producer to the big labels in Ghana, like Essiebons and Gapophone. For these labels, being their musical director, he produced i.e. well known musicians such as C.K. Mann as well as the Apagya Show Band, a legendary All-Star-Highlife-Funk-Band, or artists like Pat Thomas, Jewel Ackah and Papa Yankson - Analog Africa

Primarily a rhythm and blues funk band, they began to achieve wide acclaim as a result of their unique sound and style of choreography. The band toured as a Vegas style show band for several years; setting attendance records everywhere they played. KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 12/7/10 Ray Fernandez and His Court (LISTEN)

Ray Fernandez - Ray and His Court (Sound Triangle) 1973

- The late 60's and early 70's proved to be a fertile era for the Miami music scene. Those in the know, know that it was the heavy influx of Cuban musicians who had recently migrated to Miami as being responsible for uping the musical ante, and Ray Fernandez was the first Cuban musician to incorporate American funk and soul rhythms into the Cuban mix. Two records in particular are a testament to this fact. Originally recorded at the legendary M&M studios in Hialeah in 1973, "Cookie Crumbs" and "Soul Freedom" were prime examples of the Ray Fernandez touch. Out of print since 1974 on the highly sought after Sound Triangle label, these two pieces of 7" wax sell for as much as $650 apiece on the collectors market in America, England, Germany and Japan. World-renowned DJs Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow and Phil Asher have sampled these tracks heavily and these tracks have appeared on some of their biggest recordings. For the first time since these rare tracks have been out of print, we have assembled a CD of Ray Fernandez and his Musical Court's best recordings from the original master tapes. - Amazon

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 11/30/10 Little Willie John w/ Various Artists - R&B HIpshakers: Teach Me To Monkey ! (LISTEN)

Various Artists - R&B Hipshakers Vol 1 - Teach Me To Monkey (Vampisoul) 50 - 60"s

- Uptempo and danceable collection of R&B and early soul from the Federal and King vaults, compiled by renowned DJ Mr Fine Wine (Downtown Soulville, WFMU). First volume of our new series, sure to keep you dancing in the months ahead. Most tracks have never been reissued.

Side B: Little Willie John - My Nerves (King) 1956
Side A: Lulu Reed - What Make You So Cold (Federal) 1961
7" 45 rpm BoxSet (Vampisoul) 2010

- I wasn't even close to being a twinkle in my dad's horn-rimmed eye in 1961. But I have to conclude that there's something special about that year for me. When compiling Vampisoul's dip into King Records' deep, deep rhythm-and-blues vaults, I realized that I'm a sucker for the sounds of '61. And, well, '62 too. Not that other years slightly earlier and later aren't represented as well, but… fully a quarter of the tracks herein are from 1961. What happened then? President Kennedy happened then, for one thing, inaugurated on January 20. Also: chimps and their perhaps marginally more civilized human cousins in space; Roger Maris eclipsing the Babe, albeit with a conceptual asterisk; Jets vs Sharks on the West Side; the Cold War in full swing; a hot war in Vietnam just starting to smolder, though few Americans had even heard of the place yet. And brilliant black musicians making timeless records for a Cincinnati, Ohio family of labels - gibbling and gobbling down Broadway, implanting indelible, stinging guitar lines in the public consciousness, and making folks do the ginger snap like there was no tomorrow, which I'm sure there didn't always seem to be.

This collection of genuine King and Federal R&B sides encompasses crazy dances (the impossible-but-highly entertaining-to-picture 'Slummer The Slum'; 'Posin'', which beat Madonna to the voguing punch by some 30 years); intense guitar instrumentals (what can you say about a label employing so many superstar guitar slingers that even Freddie King probably has to fight for a spot in one's top 3, what with Johnny Watson, Ike Turner, Mickey Baker and Lowman Pauling staking pretty strong claims for inclusion themselves?); inspired forays into mind-altering whimsy ('Hog Killin' Time', the first of a trilogy of swinetingling masterpieces by Eddie Kirk, along with 'The Hawg' on Volt and 'The Grunt' on Fortune); the timeless ode to male horniness 'One Zippy Zam'; and hook-filled, honest-to-goodness love songs (try to get 'I Don't Know About You' out of your head - or your heart).

We can argue endlessly about the appropriateness of one's mom teaching one to monkey. If it's polite, sober propriety you're after, look elsewhere. For a raucous and potentially life-changing R&B dance party in a box, though, you'll find TEACH ME TO MONKEY to be just the thing. - Vampisoul

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 11/23/10 Little Francisco Greaves (LISTEN)

Little Francisco Greaves - Necia de Mi Corazon/Saying Goodbye 45rpm (Sally Ruth) 60's
- Original Pressing

SWEET ! Afro Latin Panamanian Soul Groove unlike no other with english and spanish vocals !

Little Francisco Greaves -Mooving Grooving /Hiko Ito 45rpm (Soundway) 60's

This sweet soul inspired double header harks back to Panama in the late 60’s, a time when musicians fearlessly combined and brilliantly executed styles that reflected their multicultural environment.

‘Moving Grooving’ and ‘Hiko Iko’ are both ultra rare hand clapping, foot stomping soul workouts courtesy of the Greaves brothers, Frankie and Franklyn. ‘Moving Grooving’ is featured on Soundway Records’s third release in the Panama series titled Panama! 3, compiled by Quantic and Roberto Gyemant AKA Beto.

Both tracks were originally served up on a super limited 45 on Segraves Records in 1969 and and highlight the massive influence of American soul music on musica PanameƱa during and after the black power cultural movement in the US. A reference to the early work of the godfather of soul, James Brown, may seem a tad lazy but it’s about as honest as it gets. - Soundway

This is the cover for a limited-press record from a very young Little Frankie Greaves with big brother Franklyn Greaves on guitar. Frankie Greaves also had a big hit in the mid '60s with the sweet soul Necia De Mi Corazon -see above. - Soundway
