KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound 3/23/10 Gianfranco Pienzio

Gianfranco Pienzio & Enrico Pieranunzi Liberi Armati Pericolosi OST (Beat Records) 2008

- Yet again BEAT records in Italy pull another great score out of their what seems like bottomless vaults, this cop thriller from 1976 was directed by Romolo Guerrieri and starred Stefano Patrizi, Max Delvs and also respected actor Tomas Milian. The music score was the work of Composers Gianfranco Plenzio and Enrico Pieranunzi. The sound that is achieved on this soundtrack is one that fuses dramatic music with a pop laced jazz style. Listening to this on the first occasion I was reminded somewhat of the style of British composer and jazz musician Roy Budd, because Plenzio utilises piano a great deal within the work, which is very effective. The composer employs harmonica alongside light sounding brass, understated percussion and piano with a sparing use of saxophone on the opening track, which creates an almost sunny sounding composition that one would play to accompany a drive in the country or a walk on a summers day. The theme is repeated on track two, but is arranged in a very different way with the composer engaging keyboards, and vibes combined to open the cue, harmonica returns with a laid back sounding percussion as background, then Plenzio introduces jazz flute very much in the style of Schifrin adding a touch of coolness to the proceedings. - John Mansell - Cinema Score/Soundtrack

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound KTUH 3/9/10 Cal Tjader's Modern Mambo Quintet (LISTEN)

Cal Tjader's Modern Mambo Quintet - Mambo With Tjader (Fantasy Records) 1954

- MAMBO WITH TJADER was one of vibraphonist and composer Cal Tjader's first major recordings. Fascinated with the rhythms and atmospheres of Latin music, Tjader was one of the first musicians to successfully fuse South American musical styles with straight-ahead jazz. In retrospect, the lush, laid-back, vibes-heavy groove of Tjader's inventions anticipates the "lounge" music of the '50s and '60s--offering the sort of soft, swinging soundtrack appropriate for the consumption of dry martinis on leatherette love seats. - CD Universe

KTUH: The Cookbook: Recipes of Sound KTUH 3/2/10 The Overton Berry Ensemble (LISTEN)

The Overton Berry Ensemble - T.O.B.E (C.E. Records) 1972

- Diggers know this rare record for the "Jesus Christ Superstar Medley," where at the 7:30 mark, you get the baddest moments of drum and bass lovemaking. You may recognize it as the sample source for The Coup track "Funk" remix. The rest of the album features that feel good brand of jazz-funk-blues tracks that sounds like it could be in a skate video. Snappy drums and fuzzy bass set the foundation for Berry's sparkling piano on "Compared To What," while the bluesy funk number "Black Bottom" might be finest moment here, sounding like a cross between Muddy Waters and Eugene McDaniels. The album concludes with a gorgeous soul-jazz track "Eglise." 6 tracks in all. - Turnable Lab
